Effective Room Arrangement When you watch natural teachers, you typically see students working while the teacher strolls among them in a most unremarkable fashion. Only after you watch a lot of classrooms and note the differences between effective and ineffective teachers does the importance of this strolling become clear. The most basic factor that governs the likelihood of students goofing off in your classroom is their physical distance from your body. When the teacher was standing next to you, you cooled it, but when the teacher was on the far side of the room, you talked to your neighbors. They use proximity as an instrument of management. They know that either you work the crowd, or the crowd works you. Picture three zones of proximity surrounding your body in concentric circles. We will use the colors of a stoplight — red, yellow, and green — to represent those zones. The red zone is nearest to you. Students in the red zone cool it.

But some concordancers are also able to produce a full concordance comprising all the words and other linguistic elements of the corpus. In reality there are numerous parameters to look for, such as speed, the size of the corpus the software can handle, the languages supported, the amount and quality of the documentation; especially the last point might be important if you are new to concordancing.
Trial or demo versions of most of these concordancers are available on the Web. All the necessary information can be found at their websites.

We’ll discuss the main factors that affect the speed of sound waves, and we’ll try some mathematical problems involving the wave equation. I think it’s fun to experiment with echoes. Lots of people like to shout when they’re standing under a bridge, inside a parking garage, or at the bottom of a canyon.
We know that echoes are simply the reflection of sound from the rigid walls of buildings and natural formations. But what can echoes tell us about sound waves? Can we learn how sound travels from one place to another by studying the echo phenomenon? Before we get into that, let’s review what a sound wave is. We’ve learned already that sound waves are longitudinal waves.
That is, the particles in the medium vibrate in a direction parallel to the movement of the wave.

A place for sharing fresh ideas about teaching high school math. Monday, November 22, Speed Dating I promise this is really about math I got this idea from Kate Nowak over at f t and I had been wanting to use her idea for one of my test reviews this year. We are grateful to the following for their invaluable technical and procedural assistance: We also thank Kelly Brennan, Keith Davis, and the other editors and reviewers who gave helpful comments on drafts of this article. Meredith Bombar, 4 Coleman Ave. Abstract Babytalk is a speech register that has been studied most extensively as it is spoken by mothers to infants, but without attention to its possible role in emotional bonding.
We suggest that babytalk plays such a role—that it expresses and facilitates intimate psychological connection, and in a variety of relationships. We first overview relevant literature to show that an association between babytalk and intimate attachment makes sense. Then we report a questionnaire study, which is the first to explore this association as well as the first empirical documentation that babytalk occurs in adult romances and friendships.
Self-reported features and examples of the speech register as spoken in a particular romance verified it as babytalk. Individuals who had babytalked to friends or romantic partners tended to be more secure and less avoidant with regard to attachments in general. Communication intentions accompanying babytalk paralleled the hallmarks of attachment, especially affection and play.

Innovation in Information Systems Faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course explored how students could get more — and more useful — peer feedback on their project work. During speed dating sessions, groups paired up, and then individual students representing the two groups paired up to reciprocally present and discuss their progress. Next, groups changed pairings, and the process was repeated.
The hypothesis was that, with speed dating compared to class presentations, students could a provide more feedback on project ideas as well as b provide more helpful feedback and c demonstrate greater participation in class. Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher. According to the surveys, students reported receiving and giving much more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions as compared to the presentation sessions.
Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions. Classroom observations showed greater participation by a broader proportion of students in the speed-dating sessions compared to presentations. Given these positive results, speed dating for project feedback will be used more frequently in this Information Systems course and likely others. Students reported giving and receiving more feedback, as well as being more engaged, during the speed dating events compared to the normal presentations.
More engagement was also observed by a third-party observer during the speed dating compared to the normal presentations.

Because your time is so limited, asking the right questions during your speed dating session can mean the difference between going on a second date or going home empty-handed. It is only the second class of the school year, and she already has her students speed dating in Anishinaabemowin, or Ojibwe. Chacaby started the speed-dating exercise about 10 years ago. The exercise is an icebreaker to loosen up her students—the majority of whom are not Indigenous—and get them talking. But her main method of teaching revolves around a card-based adventure game she invented called Biskaabiiyaang, which means resurgence, a direct reference to her mission to recover her language and her culture.
Every student receives a passport, in which they can record the levels of language proficiency they acquire on each quest. Based on the card game Magic: The Gathering, Biskaabiiyaang tells a story set on Turtle Island what Indigenous people call North America about a beautiful world bound together by the Anishinaabemowin language. The quest takes the entire school year, and transitions from language instruction in the fall to writing in the winter. Indigenous parents believed their children would have more opportunities and face less discrimination if they spoke English.
Chacaby was the 13th of 14 students he has taught to speak fluent Ojibwe. The prominent cultural leader has devoted the last 25 years of his life to preserving the language. Now 78, he is still teaching, though turnouts below 10 are common—even though his classes are free.
